Moses’ death and obituary
34
📚And Moses went up from the plains of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is opposite Jericho. And the LORD showed him all the land of Gilead, to Dan, 34:1 We don’t know who wrote this final chapter. Possibly it was Joshua. Moses himself wrote all the rest – Deut 31:9.⚜
2 📚and all Naphtali and the land of Ephraim and Manasseh and all the land of Judah, as far as the western 📖 sea, 3 📚and the south and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, as far as Zoar.
4 📚And the LORD said to him, “This is the land which I promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, I will give it to your offspring. I have enabled you to see it with your eyes, but you will not go over there”.
5 📚So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, in accordance with the word of the LORD. 6 📚And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but to this day no man knows the place of his tomb.
34:6 God buried Him, possibly through the archangel Michael (see Jude 9). The tendency of fallen humanity is to glorify and deify their great leaders and ancestors, and make their burial places into shrines. This may be the reason that God did not reveal Moses’s burial place.⚜
7 📚And Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died. His eye was not dim, and his natural vigour had not abated. 8 📚And the children of Israel grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab for thirty days; then the days of grieving and mourning for Moses were over.
9 📚And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit 📖 of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. And the children of Israel listened to him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.
10 📚And since then no prophet has arisen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, 11 📚in regard to all the signs and the wonders which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, 12 and in regard to all that mighty power and all the great awe-inspiring deeds which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.
